The clampdown on CBD (cannabidiol) oils—which would have seen products removed from shelves throughout the 28 countries of the European Union (EU)—is being reconsidered.
The EU had planned to ban from sale all CBD products for at least 18 months while their safety was evaluated. The products fell into the EU's 'novel foods' category, which includes supplements and therapeutic remedies that have been used only since 1997 and their safety hasn't been properly tested.
But the European Food Safety Association is reconsidering the decision after hearing evidence that hemp and hemp extracts have been used since 1220, and their safety has been well established.
The European Industrial Hemp Association (EIHA) submitted evidence to the association that demonstrated the safe long-term use of hemp in many societies.
The World Health Organization has already given its endorsement to CBD. As CBD is the therapeutic part of cannabis that doesn't have addictive qualities, there haven't been any reports of CBD abuse or addiction, the WHO has said.
People are using CBD oils to help treat pain, anxiety and epilepsy.
