    Over 609,000 deaths in the EU in 2016 were due to coronary diseases, including from heart attacks. The large majority - 90% - of these deaths occurred in people over the age of 65, and men were nearly twice as likely to die from coronary heart disease than women.

    In 2016, most households in the EU were able to pay the costs for health services with ease: The remaining 29% of households reported that they had ‘some’ (16%), ‘moderate’ (8%) or ‘great’ (4%) difficulty paying for health service costs, according to EuroStat, the EU's statistics office.

    Around 48 700 people in the EU died as a result of intentional self-harm in 2016, which is 1% of all deaths reported that year. Almost 8 in 10 of these suicides (77%) were among men. On average, there were almost 11 suicide deaths per 100 000 inhabitants in the EU in 2016.
