Following discussions at ministerial level in Berlin on 20 January and at the AGRI Council on 29 January, Member States' experts endorsed – on 1 February - in the context of a Standing Committee a Commission's proposal to reinforce the communication on the risks linked to ASF as a crucial element to prevent the spreading of the disease. Communication actions – eligible for financial support by the Commission – will target passenger transport operators as well as postal services operators. In addition, in all Member States on the main international road networks travellers will have to be informed via public awareness campaigns on the risks related to ASF. At the AGRI Council on 29 January, Commissioner Andriukaitis had stressed the "crucial importance of the human factor" in the fight against ASF, and asked Member States to make sure that "the right message reaches the right target group – farmers, local communities, hunters, forestry workers, drivers".

The Decision on these awareness raising campaigns will be formally adopted by the Commission in the coming weeks.

Yesterday, Member States' experts approved a Commission Implementing Decision relating to animal health control measures for African swine fever. The Decision, which amends Decision 2014/709/EU, reviews the control measures in place for ASF, to combat the spread of the disease.

On Monday 15 June, Health and Food Safety Commissioner, Stella Kyriakides, will participate in the EU Platform on Animal Welfare for the first time. She will present the key animal welfare actions as part of the newly adopted Farm to Fork Strategy.

The European Commission has published a roadmap for the evaluation of the EU legislation on the welfare of farmed animals. This Fitness Check is one of the ambitious actions on animal welfare foreseen by the Farm to Fork strategy, for a more sustainable agriculture. It will allow the Commission to assess the relevance of its current legislative framework composed by five EU Directives and two EU Regulations. Citizens, experts and stakeholders are invited to give their feedback, by 29 July, on the roadmap to help defining the further details of the Fitness Check.

The European Commission published a 12 weeks open consultation on the EU Strategy for Protection and Welfare of Animals 2012-2015. This public consultation, available into all EU languages, is part of a one-year external study supporting the evaluation of the EU Strategy. Launched in 2019, this evaluation aims to assess if the EU Strategy delivered its initial objectives and whether they are still relevant today. The results of the evaluation will inform future EU initiatives on animal welfare as well as actions under the EU’s Farm to Fork Strategy. Citizens, experts and stakeholders are invited to give their feedback before 15 June 2020.
