Standard drugs for asthma could make the symptoms worse in 10 per cent of sufferers

Corticosteroids are a standard drug for asthma sufferers—but they could be making the problem worse in some cases.

The drugs are useless in people who are suffering from a severe form of the disease, and they could even be making symptoms, such as inflammation, worse, research from the University of Pittsburgh has discovered.

Overall, the drugs don't work in up to 10 per cent of asthmatics, and a new approach is urgently needed to help them, the researchers say.

They discovered that the drugs are actually helping to perpetuate the cycle of inflammation, and could be doing more harm than good.
