Diabetics shouldn’t skip breakfast

People suffering from type 2 diabetes have problems controlling their levels of glucose, or blood sugar—but they can help the process by eating some protein at breakfast.

Skipping the first meal of the day is the worst thing they can do; eating lunch on an empty stomach can cause levels of insulin—which is released to break down the sugars in carbohydrates—to suddenly spike.

People think that insulin production is around the same for every meal, but that’s just true, say researchers from the University of Missouri-Columbia. “The first meal of the day is critical in maintaining glycaemic control at later meals, so it really primes for people for the rest of the day,” said lead researcher Jill Kanaley.
