Commission launches IT tool on food labelling

Today, the European Commission is launching the Food Labelling Information System (FLIS), which will provide a user friendly IT solution, enabling its users to select a food and then automatically retrieve the mandatory EU labelling indications in 23 EU languages. The system also provides links to the relevant legal provisions and existing guidance documents. In all, 87 different categories of food will be covered. FLIS is in line with the Better Regulation Strategy of the Commission as it simplifies and facilitates the smooth functioning of the food sector, where SMEs represent the majority of the operators. It is designed to help food business operators (FBOs) identify the mandatory labelling indications that should appear on their products. It aims to enhance the correct implementation of relevant legislation by FBOs and to facilitate the work of national enforcement authorities. It will also contribute to the provision of clear information to consumers and help them to make informed food choices.

Making our food fit for the future – Citizens’ expectations

Latest Eurobarometer published

Around two thirds of Europeans say that they do eat a healthy and sustainable diet most of the time, with affordability being the most common factor that would help respondents adopting a healthier, more sustainable diet. This comes out of the latest Eurobarometer survey entitled Making our food fit for the future – Citizens’ expectations. Other highlights include the fact that food producers are seen as key actors in making the food system sustainable, above public authorities. However, not all Europeans recognise their own role as consumers in improving sustainability. The main drivers influencing food decisions are taste, safety and cost, in that order, and almost all Europeans call on the public and private sectors to improve access to sustainable food and to have information on food sustainability on food labels. The Eurobarometer survey findings will feed into the ongoing work to make our food system more sustainable under the Farm to Fork Strategy. Data from this Eurobarometer was the subject of a presentation on consumer attitudes and views on sustainable food systems at the Farm to Fork conference, on 16 October 2020, by Klaus G. Grunert, Professor at Aarhus University.

This is a slight rise from last year's Report, confirming that food operators and Member States are making an extensive use of the system. 1175 were classified as 'alerts', indicating a serious health risk for which swift action was required by food operators or authorities. Aflatoxins in nuts remained, like in 2018, the most frequently reported issue in food checked at EU borders. Like in previous years, most notifications in 2019 related to food products, with a small percentage of the notifications relating to feed (6%) and food contact materials (4.5%). The RASFF was instrumental for tracing and removing the affected products from the market.

The measure helps to prevent the spread of the disease through movements of control staff and to facilitate the movement of animals, plants, food and feed into and within the EU, in spite of the current circumstances. At the same time, the measure does not modify substantial rules of EU law regulating public and animal health, food and feed safety and animal welfare.
