The final conference of the Health4LGBTI pilot project, financed by the European Parliament, is taking place 1-2 February in Brussels. Organised by EuroHealthNet and ILGA-Europe, the conference on reducing health inequalities experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and intersex  (LGBTI) people aims to raise awareness of the challenges and the barriers both LGBTI people and health professionals face in accessing and providing health services.

The conference is based on new research into the types of  health inequalities experienced by LGBTI people, focusing in particular on overlapping inequalities stemming from discrimination and unfair treatment on other grounds (e.g. older, younger, refugee, immigrant, disability, rural, poverty), carried out through 12 focus groups in six EU Member States.

In addition, a training course for health professionals on how to reduce health inequalities will be launched on 2nd February. Speaking at the conference, John F. Ryan, Director of Public Health, Country Knowledge and Crisis Management (DG SANTE, European Commission) noted: ''It is very timely that the Health4LGBTI-pilot project has established this manual for the training of health professionals on the health needs of LGBTI. It will help to improve the awareness and knowledge of health professionals and make health services more accessible for LGBTI-people.''

The conference will also attempt to place the Health4LGBTI pilot project in context, engage with health professionals and stakeholder, and discuss the next steps for policy change.
